Understanding the nature of the problem, Taylor decided that his business will change this and only bring the highest quality vanilla beans to his customers.

Taylor decided to quit his job as he saw great potential in this industry. He started investing all of his time researching and growing his business from a small basement.

By 2016, Vanilla Bean Kings needed a more spacious location because they have outgrown Taylor’s small basement. A shared warehouse? Couldn’t handle the company’s expansion for too long and once more they set out to search for an even bigger property to compensate for the fast development speed of the company. It was then that Taylor came across a location for sale in downtown Hartford and this became Vanilla Bean King’s first official office.

The event that shaped the business

The company's trip to Madagascar

In November 2019, the team took a 20-hour flight to Madagascar to see the vanilla farms for themselves and learn more about the industry. They spent almost 2 months traveling around Madagascar, meeting with different suppliers, and touring many vanilla farms. The experience truly exceeded their expectation.

After seeing everything, the company decided that its mission should be much greater than just selling vanilla beans online.

They learned that the people of Madagascar also greatly benefit from their company’s success. Sustainability and fair trade are no longer far-fetched dreams of a young entrepreneur. These are now extremely achievable goals for Vanilla Bean Kings.

Storage Options

The vanilla beans should be stored in an airtight container. You should wrap them in plastic wrap or wax paper, inside the container. It is best to store them in a vacuum-sealed container to retain their freshness and to avoid the development of mold. A Ziploc bag can also work as a container but only for a short amount of time.

Where to Store Vanilla Beans

After placing them in your desired container, you should store your vanilla beans in a cool, dark place. Never put your vanilla beans in the fridge or freezer since this will cause excess moisture to build up and mold to develop.

Airing Out

You should remove your vanilla beans from their container once every few weeks. Just let them outside of the container for a couple of minutes. This will allow them to stay fresher, for longer. After that, return them to an airtight container to avoid any mold to develop.

How long can they be stored?

Although a carefully stored vanilla bean package can last up to 1-2 years, it is advised that you should buy the intended quantity to be used within 4-6 months. 

What if my vanilla beans develop mold?

In some cases, vanilla beans may have these white layers of “frosting” on them. This is not mold. These are frosty crystals that are created when the vanillin from the inside of the beans moves to the surface as the beans are drying.
